CORE AREAS OF FOCUS:

At NSSOTA, our acting and theatre training emphasizes the following essential skills and techniques:

  • Audition Preparation and Cold Reading Skills

Students learn the skills and tools needed to deliver an excellent audition. From mastering cold readings to understanding what directors are looking for, this training ensures students are prepared to stand out in any audition scenario.

  • Repertoire Building

Students develop a collection of audition materials, including monologues, scenes, and characters, through reading and practice. This repertoire ensures students are ready when performance opportunities arise, offering familiarity and confidence with a range of material.

  • Performance – Becoming a Well-Rounded Actor

Students participate in productions, scene study, workshops, master classes, and formal and informal showings. These experiences allow students to refine their craft and grow as versatile, confident actors.

  • Physical Theatre Technique

Through movement training, students gain control of their bodies and learn how to create character-specific movements for the stage and screen. This training develops physical awareness and helps performers embody their characters fully.

  • Voice Production – Developing a Stage Speaking Voice

Actors focus on developing a clear, dynamic, and powerful speaking voice. Voice production lessons help students project with clarity and expression, essential for both stage and screen performances.

  • Acting Technique – Building Industry Knowledge

Students gain knowledge of and vocabulary for industry-standard acting techniques. They study multiple schools of thought, including Stanislavski (Method Acting), the Meisner technique, and Classical Acting ensuring a well-rounded understanding of acting training. Character development is a core component, where students explore various methods for creating realistic and multidimensional characters, learning how to use acting techniques to shape their physicality, emotions, and motivations to bring characters to life.

Young Scholars Program

The Young Scholars Program (YSP) emphasizes specific aspects of music such as music theory, music history, music appreciation, etc. This program creates strong musicians and is meant to compliment private lessons but is also perfect for a student not yet studying an instrument. Students in YSP desire a fun, engaging, in depth, and academic approach to musical knowledge and awareness. The “Young Scholars Program: Music Theory Class” incorporates thought-provoking activities and academic exercises that develop an understanding of the “nuts and bolts” of music. The class course culminates with the Texas State Theory Exam, and the student will be awarded based upon their test score. Relatedly, annual participation in the Texas State Theory exam looks great on college or scholarship applications.
